The BX-27 Random Booster from February 2024 was unusual in that all three possible pulls carried the same new Sphinx Cowl blade — 9-80GN was the designated prize, with 5-60O and 1-80GF filling the other slots. Nobody walked away without the blade, which softened the usual random-booster frustration but still made the specific 9-80GN build the harder one to source.
The design is thematically tight: an Egyptian sphinx in a nemes headdress on the chip, nine barrage-blade protrusions around the perimeter, and a 9-80 ratchet whose own nine points line up beneath them. The idea is deflection from any approach angle rather than absorption at one contact point.
In testing it has not held up as a defense piece. Sphinx Cowl runs out of spin, so on defense and stamina builds it routinely loses to spin finishes even when it survives the knockout attempts. Its better showing has been aggressive — 70-height frames with attack bits, where it can be genuinely explosive in mirror-attack matchups. It also bursts more readily than closed-profile blades because of the gap in its shape.
